Imagine a place where hairdressers and beauty professionals can experience the future of salon design firsthand. A place where innovation, functionality, and aesthetics blend seamlessly, and where every detail is designed with both the customer experience and the hairdresser’s working environment in mind. This place exists – and it’s called Just Add People.
Just Add People is not a traditional supplier of hairdressing equipment. It is a visionary company that aims to revolutionize the industry by offering ergonomically designed, exclusive, and stylish solutions for hairdressers, beauty, and wellness professionals. Behind the company stands Klaus Østergaard, who, with over 30 years of experience in the hair industry, has built a family-owned business together with his wife Anja and their sons Mads and Rasmus.
At the heart of their concept is Scandinavia’s largest inspiration house, where hairdressers and salon owners can explore 14 fully furnished salon scenarios, each with its own unique style and atmosphere. Here, they can feel and experience the difference in functional design, try world-class furniture, and find everything needed to create the perfect salon.
Just Add People is also the exclusive distributor of the world-renowned Japanese luxury brand Takara Belmont, known for its advanced hairdressing chairs, wash stations, and, most notably, its revolutionary Head Spa concept. In this context, we are proud that Just Add People has chosen to include Meishai in their Head Spa salon, where our products can be experienced in an exclusive and professional setting.
We had the pleasure of conducting an exclusive interview with Just Add People about their unique approach to the industry, their visions, and their collaboration with Meishai.
Can you tell us a bit about the background of Just Add People – what was your vision when you started?
We have always dreamed of making it easier for hairdressers to create a salon that suits their exact needs – whether they just need a new cutting chair with fast delivery or want to start a complete salon from scratch. Our name, Just Add People, reflects precisely this idea: We create the framework so that hairdressers only need to focus on filling it with happy customers. The vision is to make the right equipment easily accessible so that everyone can achieve the greatest possible success and job satisfaction in their daily work.
You challenge traditional norms in hairdressing equipment. Why was it important for you to do things differently?
We want to shake up the industry and show that a hair salon can have personality while also being fully ergonomically correct without costing extra. It’s all about bringing more life and joy into Danish salons so that hairdressers don’t have to compete solely on price.
Why are functionality and ergonomically correct furniture a priority for you? What inspired you to focus on this?
The hairdressing industry is one of the sectors with the highest turnover rates. The average age in the industry is only 28 years – and we want to help increase that. Many hairdressers experience back, shoulder, and neck problems early in their careers because they may have saved money and bought furniture that doesn’t fit their bodies. This is a significant issue that we aim to address. By offering advice on suitable, ergonomic furniture, we help hairdressers prevent injuries. It’s about creating an industry where hairdressers can sustain their careers long-term – and that starts with good working conditions.
How does your showroom help hairdressers and salon owners make the right choices?
Thoughts start flowing when hairdressers visit the showroom. Here, they have the opportunity to try a variety of different models and can easily determine which ones best suit their physical needs. It’s not uncommon for our visitors to say, “Oh, I have to give you a hug” or “Wow, I didn’t think saddle stools were for me, but now I feel so comfortable.” It may sound a bit sentimental, but we are incredibly proud to be the place in Denmark that people think of when they need help with ergonomics and salon design that enhances quality of life.
What trends do you currently see in the selection of furniture for the hairdressing and beauty industry?
After the pandemic, many hairdressers have discovered the joy of working with one client at a time and creating a more intimate and relaxed atmosphere. At the same time, the Head Spa concept is rapidly growing in Denmark, and more salons are incorporating dedicated spa and wellness treatments into their concept. We are proud to be Denmark’s only distributor of Takara Belmont’s Head Spa equipment – it is truly a great honor. Furthermore, we see a trend where more investments are being made in equipment that supports the wellness experience. Hairdressers are increasingly realizing that they can charge more for a great experience.
What was it about Meishai that caught your interest and made you want to include the brand in your Head Spa showroom?
The products are certified asthma- and allergy-friendly and are therefore fragrance-free. This allows salons to choose a signature scent oil instead, which customers associate with their salon. This could be, for example, a scent applied to the blanket the customer has over them during treatment. After personally testing the products, I also noticed that my hair looked healthier, and my curls were more defined – all without using styling products.
How do you see the future of the beauty and wellness industry? What changes and trends do you foresee?
Many people today spend hours scrolling on social media to take a break from everyday stress – most don’t even realize that the stress often comes from the constant stream of videos, spam, and advertisements. “Silent treatments” and Head Spa are emerging trends, and I believe they are connected. We expect this trend to grow, with salons increasingly offering a holistic experience where customers can choose anything from complete silence during treatment to a full spa-like experience.
Finally, as we always ask in our interviews: What does beauty mean to you?
For us, beauty starts with personal well-being – just as Meishai also focuses on. We see beauty as the result of thoughtful choices, whether it’s ergonomic furniture, healthier meals, a morning run, or a really good shampoo. Beauty is a good life.
